What is driving the changes in the ediscovery environment

ediscovery servicesAs opposed to other technology markets, the driving forces for ediscovery solutions and ediscovery services are not only linked to technological innovation and market forces. An unintended consequence of some recent judge’s decisions has affected the manner in which ediscovery service providers have approached the marketplace. Both national and international regulations are also a major contributing factor that influences the direction in which these type of services are offered, and specifically affecting the direction of the ediscovery software and solutions. In the past, organizations used to stock pile information and data simply because it was easy to do so. It was not necessarily cost effective to do it, but the retention of such information was not based on any regulation or business need at the time. Many organizations ended up installing some form of content management systems, but the real goal of controlling this information was not apparent. However, the business driver of ediscovery is sure to make companies rethink their content management strategies, and getting most to rethink what information is necessary and what information can be redundant. Ediscovery tools will also prove to companies the actual costs related to storage and archiving of all of this redundant data, thereby supporting the business case for installation of some form of ediscovery tool.
