Can a blood test to measure Telomeres determine your aging profile?
In the latest anti-aging news, it has been established that telomere length can actually determine the aging profile of an individual. As a basic concept, a telomere is simply a region of repetitive DNA sequences at the end of a chromosome. This repetitive sequence usually aids in the protection of the end of the chromosomes from deterioration. Telomeres also ensure that chromosomes do not fuse with other neighboring chromosomes. All this is extremely scientific, but what it really means is that the size and length of the telomeres can actually determine how quickly or how slowly your body will deteriorate with age. Based on the length of the telomere, researchers and doctors can now more accurately determine what they term an individual’s aging profile. Obviously telomeres alone do not contribute to the aging profile of an individual, but they do give a pretty good indication of it. Now, the latest news in the anti aging world is that a blood test has been made available that will be able to determine the exact length of the telomeres. The test will initially be made available in the UK, and later be taken to the US. However, initially the cost of the test is fairly prohibitive, running at over $750 per test. Based on the results of the test, doctors would be able to advise you whether you are aging appropriately, or are at risk of accelerated aging due to other circumstances or environmental factors.
